Wisconsin Court System - Circuit courts
Circuit courts have original jurisdiction in all civil and criminal matters within the state, including probate, juvenile, and traffic matters, as well as civil and criminal jury trials. Currently, there are 253 circuit court judges in Wisconsin. The circuit courts are divided into branches with at least one branch in every county, with the exception of six counties that are paired off and share judges.

The Wisconsin circuit courts are the general trial courts in the state of Wisconsin. There are currently 69 circuits in the state, divided into 10 judicial administrative districts. Circuit court judges hear and decide both civil and criminal cases. Each of the 249 circuit court judges are elected and serve six-year terms. On March 6, 2020, Governor Tony Evers signed bipartisan legislation to create 12 new circuit court branches, with four seats to be added each year from 2021 to 2023.

The state of Wisconsin has a state Supreme Court, a state Court of Appeals, two federal district Courts, and Trial Courts. The Circuit Courts and the Courts of Appeals were created in 1978. The Supreme Court consists of 7 justices, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals has 16 judges, and the Wisconsin Circuit Court has 253 judges in 72 counties.

Under Wisconsin law, Wisconsin circuit courts can hear a case if the WI circuit court has the authority to decide the issues at stake in the case, which is known as subject matter jurisdiction. The Wisconsin court system will also allow the Wisconsin circuit courts to hear a case if it is determined that the court has the authority to bring the defendant to court and then enforce a judgment against the defendant.
